Instagram! Finally!

 pysslar_med_lite_halsband_idag_och_gor_laxor_bu

Approximately how late am I to this party?

Well, my old phone wasn’t compatible with instagram, and I just got a new one… And I must say, the difference is pretty huge. All the apps look totally different (since my old phone didn’t get any of the updates…). I’m very impressed!

The phone I got was a samsung galaxy S3 4g. And it’s so pretty!

Anyhow, like I said I finally joined instagram and immediately followed all the accounts I’d been wanting to check out, like OCC, Minna Parikka and Agent Provocateur.

So, if you’d like to follow me, please do! My username is saffronsugar, and most of the photos I post are of my cats.

♥ Five Things ♥ Cosmetic Products I Adore ♥

2 Apr

Hey y’all! It’s time for another ‘Five Things’ post and this time, it’s about make-up! I’ve only recently become interested in make-up and about 6 months ago I rarely wore anything more than mineral powder and mascara. Times have changed. Here are my favourite cosmetic  products!

24/7 liquid liner perversion

I ♥ Urban Decay 24/7 Liquid Eyeliner in ‘Perversion’

Having only recently started wearing eyeliner frequently, I decided to buy both a liquid and a pencil liner to see what I preferred. I’ve heard a lot about how difficult liquid liner can be, and I still struggle to draw my wings on evenly. But I do think liquid liner is easier and nicer-looking than pencil liner! While my pencil liner (also from Urban Decay) is smooth, well pigmented and waterproof, I just can’t get it to look as crisp and nice as my trusty liquid liner. And sharpening it is tedious. And washing the pencil off is near-impossible. So liquid liner it is, and I’m so happy with this one! It’s pigmented, stays on all day without smudging and is easy to remove at the end of the day ♥

occ lip tar tarred

I ♥ OCC Lip Tar in ‘Tarred’

OCC products are well-known for their high quality and high pigmentation, but also for their interesting range of colours. The lip tar product is pretty much divine since they’re blendable and available in all the ridiculous colours I like (I’m so upset that ‘power plant’ is only available at sephora! I want it!!). That OCC products are all vegan is just a bonus. I use ‘Tarred’ mainly for blending with lipstick to darken colours and it works SO well! My favourite thing to do is blend it with Viva Glam Nicki II for a pale lilac-grey. It’s very dead girl-chic.

powder foundation 105

I ♥ Illamasqua Powder Foundation in ’105′

I wear mineral powder foundation as my go-to for everyday wear, but if I want to kick up the porcelain factor I apply some of this powder foundation over it – not enough for full coverage, but enough to lighten, smooth and mattify my face (good for greaseballs like me!). It also helps settle my make-up to make it last longer ♥ One good trick which you can use powder for is to lighten and prime your lips for a lighter lipstick colour. Using powder makes the colour stay longer, keeps it matte and most importantly, stops your natural lip colour from showing through your lipstick.

fair_neutral_2

I ♥ Everyday Minerals Base in ‘Fair Neutral’

Like I said, I wear mineral powder foundation and I find it works well for my skin type (I’m quite oily!). I don’t like full coverage, so I can apply this in just one or two layers just to make me look more like a human being before I leave the house. Mineral powder also works as a concealer, which is handy. Everyday minerals makes affordable, eco-friendly and organic cosmetics and I really recommend them as an alternative to more expensive, conventional mineral make-up labels.

lips

I ♥ MAC lipsticks in ‘Viva Glam Nicki II’, ‘Cyber’ and ‘Ronnie Red’

Having recently become addicted to lipsticks, MAC has been my go-to when I needed a new colour and I’ve been really pleased with my purchases! My favourite shades are Cyber, a super-dark purple, Ronnie Red which is a bright, blue-based red (limited edition, and the packaging is ultra cute) and the Viva Glam Nicki II which is a lilac. The formula and staying power varies, with Ronnie Red having the best staying power of any lipstick I own. Cyber is my go-to shade and on the days when I feel like it I wear the Viva Glam Nicki II but mixed with ‘Tarred’ like I said above. Unfortunately, MAC is very expensive in Sweden (A lipstick is $30) so I don’t indulge as often as I’d like.

What are your favourite products?

♥ Starchild Spring Sale ♥

2 Apr

Image

To celebrate the fact that Sweden is experiencing temperatures that aren’t below zero, I’m having a little sale in the shop. From now until Sunday night, you can use the code “SPRING13″ at checkout to receive 15% off any order over $7. As always, the code applies storewide, including items that are already significantly reduced (I recently lowered the prices in the SALE section some more!)

mar_16_2013_27 mar_16_2013_34

I also made quite a few new pieces for the shop. Lots of new eyeball necklaces & she-beast earrings. And pins, of course! Hope you’ll enjoy the sale ♥

Polka ♥ Dotted

28 Mar

Hey y’all! My easter holiday just started so I’m in a pretty good mood. I wore a whole lot of polka dots today!

picture110 picture113

I need to do full-length outfit posts someday… it’s just a matter of setting up the camera somewhat decently. But laziness prevails in most cases… I’ve been on a pattern kick lately. My dream is an all-polka-dotted outfit! I’ll try to snag some more patterned pieces of clothing this spring. Stripes and polka dots are my favourites but any funky pattern is right up my alley…!

Five Things (I ♥)

25 Mar

Since I’m not coming up with any meaningful posts lately, I thought I’d start doing a regular, boring ol’ list post. A classic in the blogosphere, without a doubt! On my old blog I did “Things I ♥ Thursday” following Gala Darling’s trend. If you go back through my archives I’m sure you’ll find some old posts under that title! (Maybe it’d be fun for me to see what I used to like. Have I changed? Or am I largely the same?)

Anyway, I decided to start a series of posts under the name “five things”! Mostly because I’d like to keep it short and sweet. And these posts don’t have to be positive – I’ll probably be posting five BAD things now and then.
But for this first post, the theme is Five Things I ♥!

Without further ado, let the Five Things Post commence!

Lilien_Czech_Necklace lilienczech_tiara

I ♥ These blinged-out necklaces & tiaras from Lillien Czech! I found out that this website supplied the jewellery for Meadham Kirchoff’s SS13 collection through Rookie and was delighted to find so many outrageously tacky & beautiful pieces. The affordable price tag is just a bonus! My favourite pieces are the ones with big, pink stones… but the tiara with red crystals is close to my heart too. (how do you feel about big, sparkly jewellery? is it tacky or fabulous? or both?)

square_face_saffron

I ♥ the Square Face icon generator! This trend really caught on fast on tumblr, my whole dashboard is full of little square faces… I had to make one of me, do you think it’s a good likeness? There’s also a new icon generator that makes the square face into a printable papercraft cube. I haven’t tried it yet though! (the same site also has a pixel cat icon generator. Squee.)

minieco_paper_gems

I ♥ these paper gemstones from Minieco! Print out the .pdf on coloured paper, and with a little bit of glue and a LOT of patience, you can make super cute papercraft gemstones! I made a whole bunch in different colours. Maybe I can string ‘em all together to make a necklace… or perhaps even a chandelier? How cute would that be?

bordelle_tutu_waspie_Main  Gia_shelf_bra_front_1_large

I ♥ Bordelle lingerie!
This lingerie label makes the most exquisite items I’ve ever seen. My absolute favourite design (of anything, ever) is the tutu waspie (top left) and if I had that kind of money it’d be mine in a heartbeat. I love the way their items are so structured and luxurious!

Sretsis_Pink_Pony_1_heart

I ♥ These pink pony sunglasses from Sretsis!
These sunnies are part of their SS13 collection and I adore them. Pearly-pink flip-ups with little horses on them? Very pegasister-chic. It’s like the Sukhahuta sisters (the brilliance behind Sretsis & Matina Amanita) know me. These are also fairly pricy and I won’t be buying them (I wish! Maybe they’d be a sensible investment if I actually lived in a country with…sunshine…) – instead I’ll be DIY-ing some fabulous shades for spring. Feel free to shiver with anticipation! I found these sunnies in the iheartokyo shop.

♥ etsy review: MagicMiss ♥

11 Mar

mar_11_2013_7

I included Magicmiss in my etsy shopping guide a while back, and I placed an order with her too ♥

I decided to review the items I got!

mar_11_2013_3

Everything was super cutely wrapped in a white organza bag… and Roi (who runs the shop) wrote me the cutest note ever sealed with an alicorn sticker. Squee. There were also these cute ‘rockets’ candies in there… we don’t have anything like that in Sweden!

mar_11_2013_8

Here’s what I got; Bone hair clips, Pizza slice earrings, ‘No’ heart earrings, and marshmallow earrings! All are hand-sculpted from polymer clay and so so cute!

mar_11_2013_13

The bone clips are by far my favourite ♥ They’re quite large and made from unglazed polymer clay, and feel very sturdy! The clips are alligator clips (with glitter!) which hold your hair in place really firmly. This is good if you’re like me and want your accessories to stay in place when you’re fighting evil.

mar_11_2013_12

The pizza earrings were a gift, and they’re mega cute too! I love that there’s even a bit of tomato sauce peeking out from under the cheese. Being able to display my love of junk food in jewellery form is definitely something I appreciate!

mar_11_2013_5

The ‘No’ earrings look like those valentine conversation hearts (we don’t have them in Sweden so I’ve never tried one, but I love the way they look, especially if the message is rude!) and are delightfully cute. They’re about 15mm in diameter. I’ll probably be wearing these a lot, because ‘NO’ written on a pastel heart is pretty much my entire personality condensed!

mar_11_2013_10

Last but not least, the marshmallow earrings! These were a gift as well. They look just like those little twirly marshmallows! They’re uniform in size and colour and are delightfully dainty ♥

I really recommend her shop if you’re looking for some cute, unique accessories! Not only is everything beautifully handmade but they’re clearly made & packaged with a lot of love, too!

A list of lady-led movies for your enjoyment

1 Mar

I love lists. And I love female-led movies. So here’s a list of female-led movies that I really like! While there is certainly no perfect feminist film out there (at least not to my knowledge), these are some of my favourites.

Whip It!

Starring Ellen Page & directed by Drew Barrymore, this movie is not only led by and focused on women, but also written and directed by women! The story follows 17-year old Bliss Cavendar, whose mother makes her compete in beauty pageants. Bliss doesn’t exactly love going to pageants, and while shopping in Austin she finds flyers about Roller Derby – and after attending a game, she starts skating and joins a team herself, and through the sport & the support of her teammates, she finds new strength and a new identity.

For a Good Time, Call

This movie may not sound like a feminist’s dream, but trust me, it’s pretty heartwarming. It follows two friends who start a sex line of their own to earn extra cash, and the ups and downs of their friendship and business partnership. While both women are in relationships, the main “romance” is between the two of them. It’s a cute, light-hearted film about female friendship that I really enjoyed.

Alien

Alien is pretty much THE woman-led action franchise, and the first movie is a must-see for fans of science fiction. A commercial mining ship investigates a possible SOS and inadvertently brings aboard an alien life form when a crewmember is attacked by a parasitic ‘face–hugger’ on the planet. Said alien life form turns out to be a sadistic, fast-growing monster set on killing off the crew one by one but finds a worthy opponent in the clever, no-nonsense Ellen Ripley played by actual legend Sigourney Weaver.

Aliens

In ‘Aliens’, Ripley reaches earth only to find she’s been adrift for half a lifetime. And during her time in stasis, a colony has been set up on the same planet where the first xenomorph was picked up. Unsurprisingly, the colony becomes overrun with xenomorphs who use the colonists as living incubators for their tiny, adorable baby aliens. A bunch of tough-talking space marines are sent to the colony to deal with the alien problem, and Ripley comes along, being the only person with any know-how when it comes to xenomorphs.

A League of Their Own

As someone who actively avoids anything sport-related, the baseball-themed movie is one of my (few) exceptions. The story follows sisters Dottie & Kit who join an all-female baseball league during World War II. The female league is made to replace the regular men’s league when the men are off to war, but when the tide turns in favour of the allied forces, the female league is at risk of being shut down to make space for the returning “real” stars. The story follows the sisters and follows themes of sisterhood, rivalry and following your dreams.

But I’m A Cheerleader

Megan is a typical teenage girl – cheerleader, boyfriend, many friends. But one day, she comes home to an “intervention” – her friends and parents suspect her of lesbianism, and want to send her to “gay rehab” to make her straight again. Said “rehab” is hilariously bizarre – girls are surrounded by pink and made to learn how to take care of babies and clean while boys must only wear blue and learn how to fix cars and chop firewood. In this bizarre situation, Megan falls in love with Graham, a girl who also attends the rehab. This movie is absurdly hilarious and heartwarming, as Megan comes to terms with her identity. If you like older Tim Burton stuff like Edward Scissorhands or Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, you’ll probably enjoy the strange humour of this movie!

Brave

This Disney/Pixar release is a beautifully animated story set in the Scottish highlands. Princess Merida finds out that her parents intend to marry her off to an heir to one of the three other clans, and as she has absolutely no interest in getting married, Merida cooks up a plan to win her own hand. This leads to a big fight with her mother, and Merida rides into the forest to be alone for a while. There, she meets a witch from whom she buys a spell to change her mother – but it turns out said spell has unwanted side effects. Set on saving her mother, Merida must break the spell before it’s too late. It’s a really beautiful and heartwarming movie that for once focuses on a mother-daughter relationship in a healthy way.

Resident Evil

Milla Jovovich kills zombies. There’s really not much more to say.

St. Trinians

St.Trinians has quite the legacy, as movies about the delinquent schoolgirls of St.Trinians have been made since the 1950s. This newer version stars Talulah Riley as Annabelle Fritton, who is transferred to St.Trinians, a school where her eccentric auntie is headmistress. St.Trinians is brimming with out-of-control kids and illegal activity, and Annabelle is soon pulled into the punk-rock spirit of the school. When the students find out that the school is bankrupt and is to be shut down, they devise a plan to steal “Girl with a pearl earring” and sell it on the black market to save St.Trinians from being shut down. It’s a pretty funny, cheeky heist story starring delinquent rejects and there’s a fun sequel as well, where the students overthrow an evil secret-society whose main purpose is to oppress women.

feb_28_2013_7

So two Starchild posts in a row! I shot some new necklaces today and uploaded them to the shop. I thought it’d be nice to bring back some cutesier, sweeter Crystal Cameo designs so I made a few… and one eyeball necklace.

feb_28_2013_31feb_28_2013_15

More eyeball necklaces will be up as soon as possible, I’m waiting for new eyeball cabochons right now so once those arrive there’s gonna be a whole bunch of new necklaces in different colours!  I also uploaded a pin & a pair of earrings ♥

All are available in the Starchild shop now!

pastel demons

27 Feb

A while back I sold a design called the “Space Demon Heart Pin” in the shop, featuring an eyeball and crystals on a black heart pin. I decided to reintroduce the design with a sweeter, cutesier colour scheme to wear for spring (which I’m sure will get here someday. A girl can dream, right?)

So here they are – the space demon heart pins reborn in pink and purple. Available now in the Starchild shop.

the cutest shops on etsy

24 Feb

I’m a huge fan of indie designers and DIY-ers in general, which is why it should come as no surprise to you that I love etsy. I spend a lot of time browsing the different stores there – everything from handmade to vintage to supplies. And of course, I run my own shop too!

While the site does have a problem with resellers and knock-offs (which makes me sad, especially if the person being knocked-off is someone you know or admire!) there are a lot of really amazing, creative artisans there too.

So here is a list of my favourite etsy sellers! Please note that I don’t own any of these photos – they are all taken from the respective shops. Click each photo to visit the shop!
